As Seen in Vogue – A Cure for Excess Sweating!

Vogue Magazine, October 2011, looks at the condition of hyperhidrosis, also known as excessive sweating.  The article explores the problem and looks at solutions.

EVERYBODY sweats, it’s a natural function and the body’s way of getting rid of heat.  However, most of the adult population would recognise that when we are stressed, hot or busy; that sweating process can accelerate so that the sweat becomes noticeable, showing as damp patches on clothing and lead to embarrassment and lack of confidence. For social functions or in the workplace, this is can be very undesirable and worrying about it can just seem to make it worse.

About 1% of the population are estimated to suffer from medical hyperhidrosis – a condition where the sweating function works at a very high level, causing sweating to occur at inappropriate times, far in excess of the amount necessary to maintain normal body temperature. It can occur in many different areas of the body, but most commonly affects the underarm area, palms and feet.

Vogue Magazine invited Dr Barbara Kubicka to explain how BOTOX injections into the underarm area can stop the perspiration process.

Small injections of botullinum toxin are made under the surface of the skin of the armpit.  This literally stops the nerves controlling the sweat glands and patients very quickly “dry up” after treatment.  Treatment by botulinum toxin injection can last between 4 to 12 months, although top-up treatment will then need be required as the effects begin to wear off.

For sufferers of hyperhidrosis or excessive sweating, this treatment is truly life-changing. Patients report new-found confidence.  Clothing does not get stained and any colour can be worn without worrying about sweat-patches showing up.
