Hyperpigmentation Treatments in London

hyperpigmentationHyperpigmentation is in medical terms a harmless condition. However, for those that suffer from areas of darker skin pigmentation, it can be a cause of great embarrassment and self-consciousness.

What is Hyperpigmentation?

Pigmentation refers to the colouring of a person’s skin. Hyperpigmentation is therefore where the skin becomes more pigmented and darkens in colour. This generally happens in patches, so that the appearance can be quite odd. It also tends to appear on the more visible areas such as the face or chest.

Hyperpigmentation is caused by an increase in melanin, the substance in the body that is responsible for colour (pigment).

The melanin can be stimulated into hyperactivity by certain conditions.

  1. The most common cause of hyperpigmentation is probably over-exposure to sunlight. Those areas which are already hyperpigmented can become even darker following relatively little time in the sun.
  2. Hyperpigmentation can often result during pregnancy, for example, where it is commonly known as “pregnancy mask”. This does not necessarily disappear after childbirth although it can do.
  3. In some cases, hyperpigmentation can be a reaction to medicines, such as anti-biotics or anti-malarial drugs.

Hyperpigmentation Skincare Advice

The most important advice for those sufferers of hyperpigmentation is to avoid the sun’s rays, which will stimulate further melanin production and darken the patches further.

  • Avoid exposure to sunlight where possible
  • Use a strong sunscreen of SPF30 or more, even in winter

Hyperpigmentation Treatment, London

In addition to sensible care, there are good dermatology treatments that can significantly help with hyperpigmentation.

Dr Barbara Kubicka offers a number of treatment options in her London clinic, including:

  • Chemical peel – for deep exfoliation and skin conditioning
  • Dermaroller – boosting the skin’s own healing mechanisms
  • Mesotherapy – micro injections of active ingredients deep into the skin

Treatments tend to work by stimulating renewal of the skin, boosting supply of collagen. Newer skin tends to appear clearer and fresher.

These options may be used alone or can be combined for enhanced results. Treatment for hyperpigmentation will depend on individual patient and the site, depth and cause of the discoloration.

Dr Barbara Kubicka is a highly experienced Aesthetic Medicine Physician.
