Is Sun Damage Inevitable?

sun UVA UVB

Research has calculated that the sun is responsible for 80% of visible skin ageing.

The study looked at nearly 300 women, half of who had sun bathed actively and half of who had relatively little sun exposure. The results included:

  • 80% of skin ageing was attributed to UV rays
  • a 2% increase in skin damage can age a face by 3 years
  • sun worshippers over 50 looked older than their real age

However, sun damage is not inevitable. The study showed that those who had avoided the sun and/or used high protection factor sunscreen year round had noticeably fewer lines and wrinkles for younger looking skin. We all age and very few of us can wholeheartedly say that they’ve had a lifetime of perfect sun protection. That would mean never burning and always wearing SPF30+ even in winter.

Treating Sun Damage

Even for sun worshippers, there are treatments that can reverse the visible signs of sun damage and make the skin appear more youthful and fresh.

Treatments to consider include:

  • botox for lines and wrinkles
  • dermal fillers for deep creases
  • IPL treatments for sun damage, including pigmentation problems
  • mesotherapy injections to nourish the skin
  • dermaroller microneedling to tighten the skin and stimulate collagen production
  • chemical peels to tackle rough skin texture
The range of treatments may seem bewildering, so the best course of action is to start with a private consultation with an experienced skin doctor, who can assess the skin and advise on the most appropriate treatments.

Preventing Sun Damage

It is never too late to protect the skin from the sun. We all know the theory, a high protection quality sunscreen every day of the year. Just make it part of your routine, or choose a moisturiser or makeup with sun protection included. Don’t forget to protect hands, neck and chest too, which are also exposed to the sun but often left unprotected.

After having a professional skin treatment, sun protection becomes even more vital in order to retain the youthful looking skin.
