Sunshine, Tanning, Botox and Fillers

sun and botoxWith the summer of 2013 set to break records for sun, what is the best advice for tanning after cosmetic treatments such as Botox or dermal fillers?

Sun-starved brits are spending longer in the sun than we’ve managed for a few years, so it is important to follow advice for safe-sun before and after cosmetic injections.

Botox and the Sun

Botox is highly effective at relaxing and smoothing fine lines and wrinkles so that patients look younger and fresher. The injection inhibits fine dynamic facial muscles, limiting the excessive movement that is associated with wrinkles. It is a good treatment for those that have sun-related facial ageing.

However, if you are planning to have botox injections, it is recommended to not expose skin to the sun the same day as your treatment as the natural dilation of blood vessels in the skin to increase circulation can diffuse the Botox quicker than desired, therefore lessening its impact.

In addition, high protection sunscreen is always advisable to avoid the ageing effect of damaging UVA and UVB rays.

Dermal Fillers and Suntanning

Dermal fillers such as Juvederm and Restylane are based on hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring water-retentive substance which can be used for plumping lips and minimising unwanted creases or wrinkles.

After treatment with dermal fillers, normal sun precautions are all that is required. It is advisable to stay out of the sun on the day of treatment while the skin is healing. In very rare cases, discoloration in the skin where the filler was injected may appear after too much sun exposure. Patients are recommended to use a high protection sunscreen at all times in order to protect the skin from premature ageing.
