After extensive consideration, NICE, the National Institute for health and Clinical Excellence, has approved that sufferers from chronic migraine can be treated with Botox injections under the NHS.
Botox injections are better known for the aesthetic benefits, as they improve the appearance of facial lines and wrinkles. In fact, Botox is the world’s most popular cosmetic treatment.
However, when more and more patients began to report that their migraine symptoms had improved, the benefits of Botox were realised to be wider than just cosmetic.
There are an estimated 700,000 migraine sufferers, who experience debilitating symptoms such as nausea, visual disturbance and dizziness as well as severe headaches.
A course of Botox injections can provide great relief. Unfortunately, according to NICE recommendations, those sufferers who have 8 or more attacks per month and failed to find relieve from 3 different medications may be offered Botox, which narrows down the numbers that will qualify.
For those who do not qualify on the NHS but wish to explore whether Botox treatment can alleviate migraine symptoms is available privately, at cosmetic treatments clinics such as Dr Barbara Kubicka’s in Belgravia, which sees West London patients from surrounding areas such as Knightsbridge, Mayfair and Chelsea. All treatments are carried out by Dr Kubicka, a highly trained and experienced aesthetic doctor who is registered with the GMC.
